I don’t think Painted
Horses by Malcolm Brooks needs a lot of critical analysis. It was intended
to be a light read and was viewed as such by the attending group.
It was generally felt that the story lacked plausibility, particularly the love story. That being said, each in the group found some part of the story interesting. There was especially interest in the historical context of the creation of Yellowtail Dam and Bighorn Lake.
Several Apes thought the
writer a bit verbose and his writing in this, the author’s first novel, not
quite seasoned.
For my part I liked the
book mainly because of its themes of horses, archeology, the Crow tribe, the
wild places of south-central Montana, and the transitioning of that area from
the old West to the new West.
I was personally
comfortable with the writer’s style which brought me along through places and
situations with clarity. Given that some of the characters were not very relatable,
a few were unique in my reading experience, and some of the nested stories
within the main narrative, although a bit jumbled, were also new territory.
